Studio Photography

Updated: May 1, 2022

When I first started my photography project I was doing a lot of location shoots. So, when I decided to expand my work into the studio I needed to recap my knowledge. I love all types of photography. However, being in a photographic studio is so different to other types like being on location. Because when you're inside you have full control over the lighting, there are no distractions and you don't have to worry about the weather.

What is studio photography ?

Studio photography really has no limits. Fashion, still life, portraits, animals, the list goes on. You can create harsh light or even just recreate natural lighting you'd get outside, that's the beauty of the studio, you can almost produce anything you like.

I was doing self portrait and using the Phase One camera. For my first studio shoot back it sounds a bit hasty, however I did have an assistant to help because it was self portrait. Here is an image from the shoot :

When I took the photo I thought it was an ok image and the idea is there. I wanted to show my hand in my grandmas jewellery, which is what the image does. However, in post production I realised that this isn't a technically good image. The focus isn't on the jewellery (which should be the main focal point). Also, the lighting on the front of the hand is way too dark. I took all this into consideration, did more research on lighting, I used a trigger and created this :

Instantly, you can see this image is stronger. The lighting is bright yet still got shadows to bring depth into the image, the ring is lit by the side light and the overall positioning of my hand is better.
