Humour, Intimacy, and Sincerity: Celebrating Family Photography

Updated: May 1, 2022

This journal, by Studio 1854, really influenced my project. When I read through I straight away related to it. The first quote that stood out to me was “I had learned that the best way to make meaningful photographs, as a photographer starting out, would be to document what I knew best, what I loved” (Hardy, n.d.). This is exactly what my project is about, my work is so personal to me and that's why I love creating images. As a photographer creating work is fun but when it's something you care about I always find the work being more interesting and wanting to spend time to make more. Here is an image from Emma Hardy :

1854, S. Humour, intimacy, and sincerity: celebrating family photography - 1854 Photography. 1854 Photography. Retrieved 26 April 2022, from https://www.1854.photography/2019/11/humour-intimacy-and-sincerity-celebrating-family-photography/.

This image looks like the classic photo you'd see in someones family albums. The Sun, the setting and the security of family. Hardy says “There is a different psychological charge to the pictures I’ve made with her compared to our relationship without a camera between us.” (Hardy, n.d.). I think whenever someone is photographing family or someone/something they feel strongly about it's always hard to communicate that feeling though an image. My work makes me feel a type of emotion but the most important thing for me is to make the viewers feel that emotion too, whether it trigger a memory for them or they see themselves in my work.
