Envelope Making

Updated: May 1, 2022

I wanted to make a sleeve / envelope as a test for my final outcome. I went to Calder Art Supplies in Huddersfield, they had all the paper you could think of. I wanted paper with a lot of texture in it, I also wanted red coloured paper to tie into my theme of 'Red Shirt'. The two papers that stood out to me were these two :

The reason I was drawn to this paper is because of the texture it has. It is a Thai Mulberry Paper in the colour Red.

I then saw this paper which I knew I had to use because of the texture, multiple colours and different materials in it. It is also a Thai Mulberry Paper in the colour Ruby.

Although this paper is really nice it was very thin like tissue paper, so I also bought a sun dried paper in a cream colour as a base for the Ruby paper. The reason I chose cream rather than white is because it went better with the red as cream is very warm toned like red. Whereas, white is cool toned.

Making The Envelope

My images are 5 by 7 inches so I decided to make the sleeve slightly bigger than the images because I have quite a few. So my measurements for this was 15cm by 19cm. Here is what my template looked like :

The extra flaps on the side is what I used to stick it all together when it's folded. After I checked the images fit I glued this together. I then cut the Ruby paper to fit and glued it around this cream paper. I then cut a semi circle out the top so it's easier to get the images out. This is the final product :

Overall, I like the final outcome. I think having the cream paper on the inside makes it more stable and looks more professional. Calder Art Supplies were very helpful, which enabled me to make this envelope.
