Carlotta Cardana came into my university as a guest speaker and spoke to us about her practice and her journey to getting to where she is today. She is an Italian photographer from London and she focuses on editorial and commercial work. Over the years she did other forms of photography, for example she used to be a wedding photographer, she also travelled a lot to see who would want her images. She went to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where her brother lives, unfortunately nobody wanted her work so she went to Mexico City. She was also taking a lot of her images on film because digital was too expensive. She then came to London and started working on her personal practice.

This is a photo from a project she did about Italians that were promised a good life in the UK but instead came across money worries and no jobs. She enjoyed photographing people based on her background, for example photographing people originally from different countries but now live in the UK. She is investigating the relationships between people and their environment and how people have changed due to their surroundings and what society says they should do. Her work is very much interesting to her because it is about topics she feels strongly about. Her talk helped me realise why it is so important for me to create work that is interesting to me. And that I like my work to have a meaning behind it not just images for commercial work.
